A team of researchers from the University of Melbourne in Australia discovered three multi-drug-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermis which emerged in recent decades and spread globally.
The team studied samples from 78 medical institutions across 10 countries, releasing their findings in the journal Nature Microbiology on this week.
Doctors are warning of a potentially fatal and “formidable” new nightmare pathogen which has spread to hospitals across the globe and is resistant to all known antibiotics.
S. epidermidis, a relative of the better-known MRSA superbug, is found commonly on human skin, and poses no real threat to the majority of the human population.
However, people who have compromised immune systems, are recovering from surgery or have implanted medical devices such as catheters or joint replacements are susceptible to the potentially-severe and sometimes fatal infection.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is warning Americans about a drug-resistant “nightmare bacteria” that has spread to every state after more than 200 cases last year.
More than 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by drug-resistant germs, according to the CDC, and last year a first-of-its-kind nationwide study uncovered 221 instances of a rare antibiotic resistant (AR) “nightmare bacteria”.
It mostly afflicts people either in or visiting hospitals and nursing homes. It’s thought the number of cases is actually higher as only certain labs in each state were involved in the study, explained the CDC in a Vital Signs report.
