Curacao received over half million tourists, generating some $1 billion in revenue. Our tourism industry mostly employs foreign low paid forces, representing a huge percentage of the nation’s (illegal) workforce.

Fast forward to the current landscape, sustainability is an increasingly vital aspect of our daily lives and of businesses’ operations, drawing focus on carbon-intensive industries like aviation, accommodation and food and beverage (F&B).

The travel industry, in particular, has long been associated with high levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and waste generation.

Not to mention the vast amounts of waste, including plastic bottles, food waste and other single-use items generated from tourism activities, such as hotels and restaurants, which are known to set off a nearly 50% food disposal to please the overall menu.

While it’s seems to be impossible to provide an exact figure for total waste generated by the tourism industry in Curacao, available data from aggregate sources of data suggests significant contributions, particularly in plastic waste generation.

On the other hand, aviation accounts for around 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Experts opine that the common thread tying the challenges of sustainable aviation and tourism lies in overcoming entrenched systems driven by fossil fuels and unsustainable practices.

Both industries require advancements in technology, infrastructure and regulations, while grappling with high costs and changing consumer behavior.

As the effects of climate change on the environment become more apparent, numerous initiatives have been launched to achieve carbon neutrality and environmental sustainability.

Travelers may be adding to global warming by engaging in climate–altering practices like flying or staying in hotels. Thus, this study examined the connection between tourism and carbon emissions, considering a few additional unique aspects.

The long–run and short–run coefficients were calculated by applying the auto-regressive distributed lag (ARDL) method using data spanning 1990–2019.

Traveler numbers along with fossil fuel energy use, economic growth, financial development, gross fixed capital formation, and population have a positive association with long–term carbon emissions?

However, the findings revealed a negative link between renewable energy consumption and carbon emissions.

Several methods, including Canonical Cointegration Regression (CCR), Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS), and Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS), were used to independently verify the results.

The results of this research have important policy implications for achieving carbon neutrality and promoting sustainable tourism development in Curacao by boosting renewable energy use.

Similarly, airlines are investing in more fuel-efficient aircraft, optimizing flight routes, and implementing carbon offset programs to mitigate emissions.

While the Covid-19 pandemic has undoubtedly affected the tourism industry’s immediate contribution to Curacao’s gross domestic product (GDP), it is crucial to view this setback as an opportunity for transformation and sustainable growth.

Worldwide travel pollution hits new records but is censored by the marketing and media businesses in order to promote invasive mass tourism? A person transported by airlines cause 10 times more emissions compared to the one driving a V8 automobile!
