Poland has agreed to buy shale-gas from the USA for 20 years. The Polish energy corporation PGNiG (Polskie Gornictwo Naftowe i Gazonictwo) announced that it has signed a long-term gas contract with the USA.
The agreement with the American company Venture Global LNG is intended to last for 20 years, and will help the company to completely free itself from Russian gas, once its current contract with Russia expires in 2022.
Each year, Poland will receive 2 million tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the USA, roughly 25 tankers per year, or 2.7 billion cubic meters of fuel after re-gasification.
The contract to purchase American LNG, which will cover roughly 20% of Poland’s demand, will improve Poland’s competitiveness in the energy sphere. Europeans “are being forced to buy much more expensive liquefied gas from the United States instead of Russian gas.
So far the gas coming from the USA is more expensive. The contract supposed to have been competitive to the gas coming the other sources, like from Qatar or Russia.
But Washington clearly forces Europeans to abandon Nord Stream 2, despite the fact that gas deliveries to Germany via the pipeline could be 2,000 km shorter than through Ukraine, and the cost of transit could be halved.
