Germany shows where Europe might be heading

September could prove decisive for Germany’s political future, with elections in Saxony-Anhalt, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin.

If the ruling Christian Democratic Union suffers serious defeats across the board, which is by no means certain, the federal government itself could come under pressure and for Chancellor Friedrich Merz, the consequences may be more immediate.

A CDU defeat in Saxony-Anhalt had been expected, but the scale is nevertheless notable. Whether Alternative for Germany ultimately secures an absolute majority and can form a government on its own is almost secondary, because the message to Germany’s political establishment could hardly be clearer.

The warning light is flashing red.

Merz himself has become part of the problem. Judging by this campaign, he has reached the unenviable political stage at which his interventions appear to produce the opposite of their intended effect, so the more passionately he urges voters in one direction, the more determinedly some seem to move in another.

On the night of September 7, 2026, the results of landmark state elections were finalized in Berlin.

Officially, the numbers recorded a crushing defeat for the ruling elites in one of Germany’s smaller states – Saxony-Anhalt, home to just 2.1 million people. Yet many are already interpreting these figures as a complete breakdown of Germany’s postwar political order.

For the first time, the right-wing conservative party Alternative for Germany (AfD), led by Ulrich Siegmund, captured a historic 43.8% of the vote, coming within a single step of an absolute majority in the state parliament.

Add to that the result of the left-wing conservatives from the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) at 5.3%, and the historic collapse of the CDU, which plummeted to 17.2%, and the math of Germany’s crisis becomes unforgiving.

An overwhelming majority of residents in this eastern state officially voted for a radical break from the policies of the current federal government under German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The long-standing Berlin consensus of the traditional parties – the much-touted political Brandmauer (firewall) designed to isolate Eurosceptics from financial and political power – has now collapsed.

In German expert circles, an uncomfortable diagnosis is increasingly being whispered, if not yet spoken aloud: modern Germany is gradually sliding into systemic, ungovernable chaos, which, in terms of its fractured personnel, social fabric, and psychological state, directly evokes the pre-Reich atmosphere of the late 1920’s.

Attempts by the liberal mainstream in Berlin and Brussels to interpret this resounding explosion simplistically – purely through the lens of the migration crisis – only reveal a deep functional blindness. The ‘Saxon filter’ has sifted out the political chaff, exposing the underlying processes that are inexorably transforming Europe.

Saxony-Anhalt therefore matters beyond Saxony-Anhalt and the treatment of the AfD after its electoral breakthrough will provide a useful indication of how far Germany’s establishment is prepared to go to preserve the existing political architecture, and what consequences follow when it does.

None of this means that the Western Europe emerging from the present transformation will necessarily be more congenial to Russia, and Moscow should harbor no illusions on that score.

A Europe of resurgent nationalism and competing interests has historically been quite capable of producing instability of its own, and Russia has rarely escaped the consequences.

But political systems don’t remain fixed indefinitely and the European order created during the age of triumphant globalization is entering a period of profound adjustment. Germany may simply be where that transformation is becoming impossible to ignore.
