Israel has been accused of building a fleet of orbital energy weapons — a ring of firepower that places the entire planet in its crosshairs.
In June, Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that Israel is developing a space-based laser system designed to intercept and disable satellites, adding that the country intends to become “the leading country in the world with this capability.
Now, it appears Israel hasn’t just entered space — it has quietly wrapped the entire planet in a cage of orbital energy weapons.
“It will ensure the advantage of deterrence, of the ability to attack, destroy, and all of the other matters, versus our enemies with large resources,” Katz said.
The announcement places Israel among a small group of nations — including the United States, China, and Russia — pursuing space-based directed-energy weapons, a technology that has long been discussed in military circles but never fully fielded.
According to Katz, the system would use laser technology positioned in space to target satellites. Few technical details have been released: the timeline, the cost, the specific satellites it would target, and whether the system is operational or still conceptual all remain unclear from the public announcement.
Satellites underpin modern military operations — navigation, communication, reconnaissance, and missile warning all depend on them. A weapon capable of disabling an adversary’s satellites would, in theory, degrade their ability to coordinate forces and see the battlefield.
That is also why the prospect worries arms control advocates. Anti-satellite weapons, or ASAT’s, have been tested before — most notably by China in 2007 and Russia in 2021 — and those tests created thousands of pieces of debris that remain in orbit, threatening other satellites and the International Space Station.

A laser-based system could avoid that debris problem, since it would disable rather than destroy a target.
Space has become an increasingly militarized domain. The USA established a Space Force in 2019. Both Washington and Moscow have accused each other of pursuing space weapons.
And the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 — which Israel is party to — prohibits placing weapons of mass destruction in orbit, though it does not explicitly ban conventional or directed-energy weapons.
