Republican Rep. Thomas Massie has introduced articles of impeachment against Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, accusing him of abusing Pentagon powers in the war of aggression against Iran and other US military operations he describes as unlawful. The resolution could force a House vote.

US military invaded Venezuela and kidnapped President Maduro

Massie charges Hegseth with >>>

  • Minab school strike: Hegseth degraded civilian-protection safeguards in a way that Massie says resulted in the death or injury of more than 200 civilians at the Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School in Minab.

  • Unauthorized War with Iran: Massie argues that continued US hostilities lacked congressional authorization and violated Congress’ constitutional war powers.

The US war against Iran has already cost the Pentagon an estimated $38.1 billion through August 1, according to a new Congressional Budget Office report — and the bill is still rising. CBO says another month of fighting could cost $2–3 billion, depending on the intensity of operations.

Iran vulnerable to the consequences of another attack on Israel

The biggest bill has been ammunition. The US spent an estimated $21.7 billion replacing munitions already fired, including $13.1 billion in missile-defense interceptors used against Iranian ballistic missiles and drones.

The USA has probably used “between one-half and two-thirds” of its missile-defense interceptor inventory since June 2025, with the Iran war depleting those stocks further.

Iran struck over 15 US Military sites across the Middle East

Rebuilding them would probably take at least five years — even if production increased, according to the report.

Iran also inflicted major equipment losses. CBO puts battle losses at roughly $1.9 billion, including a $500 million THAAD radar, aircraft and drones.

The economic blow-back is reaching Americans too: the conflict pushed up oil, gasoline and diesel prices and added to inflation, while higher energy costs are filtering through the wider economy.

Iranian Operation True Promise III against Israel

  • Extrajudicial killings at sea: Massie charges Hegseth with responsibility for at least 221 deaths aboard vessels suspected of narcotics trafficking, including secondary strikes and failures to rescue powers.

  • Retaliation against Sen. Mark Kelly: after Kelly told US troops, “Our laws are clear. You can refuse illegal orders,” Massie says Hegseth used the Pentagon to intimidate and retaliate against him.

  • Venezuela : Massie described the US operation that abducted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife as the “kidnapping of a sovereign foreign leader,” arguing that the narcotics-enforcement rationale masked an effort to assert US control over Venezuela’s oil.

Massie concluded that Hegseth warrants impeachment and trial, removal from office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust, or profit under the USA.
