French Justice Minister Nicole Belloubet ignored President Trump threat to release European ISIS mercenaries back onto European soil.
President Trump urged the British, French, German and other European allies to take back over 800 terrorist mercenaries captured by the US military and its allies in Syria and bring them to justice.
At this stage France is not responding to Trump’s demands, noting that Paris would stick to its policy of repatriation of French nationals from Syria and Iraq on a “case by case” basis.
Other European powers have taken a similarly hostile attitude to President Trump’s repatriation request.
Officials from Denmark, Norway and Sweden rejected the demand outright or are saying they would not work pro-actively to repatriate their terrorist nationals.
Thousands of foreign based assassins joined ISIS between 2014 and 2016 as the terrorist group conquered wide swathes of Syria and Iraq and established a so-called caliphate.
In addition to volunteer mercenaries from the Middle East, Asia and Russia, fighters traveled to the war zone from Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, the UK and the USA.
The repatriation of foreign fighters has been a particularly sensitive issue for France. The French government estimated that nearly 700 French nationals had traveled to Syria and Iraq, including 293 women.
