The Sarte Canal Bridge is a canal bridge with a length of 498 meters that bridges the Center Canal over the valley of Thiriau du Sart and the intersection of the N55 and N535 near the Belgian town of Houdeng-Gœgnies.
One of Europe’s most impressive engineering marvels is so well integrated into the land that many may not even notice it.

The Sart Canal Bridge, near the town of Haunaut in Belgium, is world-renowned as an incredible feat of construction. It provides navigation and connectivity between the two waterways it brings together – but most notably, is used as both a road and a canal.
The amazing bridge stretches to a massive 498m in length. It was painstakingly put together using a whopping 65,000 tons of concrete.
But it needs all of that, as the canal is responsible for transporting 80,000 tons of water across the half-kilometer. It is understood to have cost around €29million – just under £25million.

The canal was made to make navigation easier along two significant canal route. It is part of the link between the artificial lake Grand Large near Nimy, along with the Brussels-Charleroi Canal near Seneffe.
This makes it especially useful both for the efficiency of moving goods around, as well as passenger transportation across the region. It is part of Canal du Centre, which totals 20.9km (13 miles) in length.
It took four years to make, being built from 1998 to 2002, and is one of the longest canal bridges in the world. But while it may serve its purpose beautifully, it also does so with a distinctive style, and is easily mistaken for an ordinary road.

The unique design is characterized by U-shaped girders, innovative use of pre-stressed concrete – where the material is exposed to the tensions and pressures it will experience when in operation while it is being made.
It has emerged as a popular tourist destination, both to marvel at the engineering and for its picturesque views of the Sambre River.
Standing at a height of 131 feet, the jaw-dropping bridge boasts 18 piers. It is especially impressive given that reports from the time suggest the bridge was built on unfavorable ground.

It was created using the innovative incremental launching technique, in which successive deck segments are built on one end of the bridge and then launched out, with the support structure built underneath as it goes.

Belgium is a country in northwest Europe. Founding member of the European Union, it covers an area of 30,528 square kilometers and has a population of about 10.7 million.
From the end of the Middle Ages until the 17th century, it was a prosperous center of commerce and culture.
Upon its independence, Belgium eagerly participated in the Industrial Revolution and, at the end of the nineteenth century, possessed several colonies in Africa.

Today, Belgium’s strongly globalized economy and its transportation infrastructure are integrated with the rest of Europe. Its location at the heart of a highly industrialized region helps made it 2007 the world’s 15th largest trading nation.
Cultural life is nowadays concentrated within each language community and a variety of barriers have made a shared cultural sphere less pronounced.
Anyway, the region corresponding to today’s Belgium has seen the flourishing of major artistic movements that have had tremendous influence on European art and culture.
