China and the Vatican Church strike historic deal on Bishops after more thanĀ 60 years of uncertainty regarding Catholic clergy members operating in China.

Announced byĀ Pope Francis, the deal clears the way forĀ the reappointment ofĀ clergy inĀ China, concerning the nomination ofĀ bishops.

The accords ā€œcreate the conditions forĀ greater collaboration atĀ the bilateral level”. With these decisions, a new process may begin that will allow the wounds ofĀ the pastĀ to be overcome, leading toĀ the full communion ofĀ all Chinese Catholics.

The Pope recognized seven bishops earlier appointed byĀ China withoutĀ the approval ofĀ the Holy See and an eighth bishop who ā€œhad expressed the desire toĀ be reconciled withĀ the Apostolic Seeā€ beforeĀ he died last year.

The deal also ruled outĀ that bishops inĀ the future would be proposed byĀ the Chinese authorities and then approved byĀ the Pope, the BBC reported.

China said that a ‘provisional’ agreement was signed betweenĀ vice foreign minister Wang Chao and Vatican under-secretary forĀ relations withĀ states Antoine Camilleri.

The two sides will ā€œcontinue toĀ maintain communication and push forward the improvement ofĀ bilateral relations.Ā The agreement came asĀ a part ofĀ Chinese President Xi Jinping’s program of ā€œsinicizingā€ religious practices inĀ China.

The Chinese government should ā€œprovide active guidance toĀ religions so that they can adapt themselves toĀ socialist society,ā€ the Chinese president said, cited byĀ the Guardian.

There are an estimated 12 million Catholics inĀ China, however, the Vatican cut ties withĀ Beijing two years afterĀ the establishment ofĀ theĀ Communist People’s RepublicĀ of China. The Vatican was also one ofĀ 17 nation-states toĀ recognize Taiwan asĀ The Republic ofĀ China, separate fromĀ the mainland.

Pope Francis has sought toĀ improve relations withĀ China sinceĀ he took office inĀ 2013. China had repeatedly declined the Pontiff’s overtures, saying that the Vatican should give upĀ its recognition ofĀ Taiwan and promise not toĀ interfere withĀ mainland China’s domestic policies.

The Taiwanese government noted that it has been assured byĀ their European ally that the deal was ā€œnot ofĀ a political or diplomatic natureā€ and it would not affect their diplomatic relationship.
