A commuter train derailed near Barcelona on Tuesday after a retaining wall collapsed onto the tracks, killing the driver and injuring all 37 passengers on board, Spanish emergency services said.

The crash occurred just two days after a train collision in southern Spain that killed at least 42 people. At least 39 people have been killed and dozens more injured after two high-speed trains collided in southern Spain, police have said.

The incident is โ€œtruly strangeโ€ as it happened on a flat, recently renovated stretch of track, the transport minister has said.

The incident happened in the Adamuz municipality, near the city of Cordoba, in the countryโ€™s Andalusia region at 7:45pm local time (6:45pm GMT) on Sunday, according to rail operator Adif.

The tail end of a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid with about 300 passengers aboard went off track and crashed into an incoming train carrying 200 people from Madrid to Huelva, causing it to also derail, the operator said.

Rescuers have been deployed on site, removing all of the survivors from the overturned carriages by midnight, Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente said. However, he warned that the death toll could still rise, with the search for bodies continuing.

The reasons for the crash are yet to be established, Puente said. He called the incident โ€œtruly strangeโ€ because it happened on a flat stretch of track that had been renovated last May. The train that was first to derail was also less than four years old, he added.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. โ€œTonight is one of deep sadness for our country,โ€ he wrote on X.

Blackouts in Europe cause chaos in Spain & Portugal

Spain has the largest rail network for trains traveling at speeds of over 250kph (155mph) in the EU, with over 3,000 km (1,900 miles) of track.

The country last had a major railway accident in 2013 when 80 people were killed after a train derailed in the north-western city of Santiago de Compostela.

You got that right PeC the retaining wall could collapse due to ground vibration from rail construction machinery when installing the new railway line .Two trains colliding can be due to faulty electronic sensors not indicating correctly back to the central rail traffic indicator display or just human error .

In any case its down to as you say lower standards of mechanical or electronic engineering compared to China.

I am curious if there is a possible connection between the train accidents and Spainโ€™s condemnation of Israeli war crimes in Palestine in the international arena. Iโ€™m sure that the war criminal in chief is not happy with the Spanish government and would like to see it fall.
