Evo Morales, who led Bolivia for 13 years, announced his resignation on Sunday 10 November, 2019 facing calls to resign from the country’s military and police.
Morales said he made the decision so his political rivals would stop harming the families and properties of members of the ruling Movement for Socialism (MAS).
The 80th president of Bolivia, Morales is widely considered to be the first Native American leader since Spanish colonialism and was the longest-serving president of Bolivia. Born on 26 October 1959, he was first elected president on 22 January 2006.

Luis Fernando Camacho, a Santa Cruz civic leader and opposition figure, said Sunday that an arrest warrant for Morales had been issued, adding that Bolivian police, along with the nation’s armed forces, have launched a search in the province of Chapare, where the former president has allegedly fled.

In 2014, in an article ‘Evo Morales has proved that socialism doesn’t damage economies,’ The Guardian said that, under Morales’s leadership, extreme poverty had declined by 43% and moderate poverty had declined by 25%, while social spending increased by over 45%, including raising minimum wages twice: by 87.7%.
Morales’s economic achievements were praised by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund although Morales began his tenure by ditching IMF recommendations.
