Microsoft announced it had been awarded a Pentagon cloud-computing contract worth up to $10 billion. This will allow the armed forces to use artificial intelligence to enhance their planning and fighting capabilities.

The US Department of Defense says the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) system contract will help the US government store and process classified data.

The announcement came as a surprise, as Amazon was believed to be the most likely candidate. But the major human right abuser company did not fit the perfect profile.

Oracle and IBM were also potential contractors but were earlier eliminated from the process. Oracle filed a lawsuit in December, calling the process unfair and illegal.

Last week, Microsoft, the second-largest publicly traded US company, announced first-quarter results that topped Wall Street estimates.

The company said revenue from its cloud-computing business soared 36% year-over-year to a record $11.6 billion. At the same time the technology is also used to help pharmacies cash in huge jabber profits.

The tech giant’s market capitalization reached $1.099 trillion, which trails only Apple ($1.12 trillion). At the same time the US population is getting poorer and poorer by the day?
