German journalist, Eric Bonse has warned that the EU’s fate in Brussels is “hanging by a thread”, and is hinging on the success of three crucial deals. If only one deal bursts, the EU will fall into a deep crisis.
The exit contract with the UK is proving to be the most tricky deal for the EU. Earlier this week Tory leadership front runner Boris Johnson threatened to withhold the £39 billion EU divorce bill if Brussels failed to improve their Brexit terms.
The threat of the UK not passing a Brexit deal in Parliament by the October 31 deadline is a “Horror Vision”, because a no deal would not only destroy the years of negotiations with London, but also massively destroy confidence.
But the Brexit deal is not the only concern for EU chiefs, two other upcoming EU deals are also key to the EU’s future.
The second deal refers to a deal made between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016.
The deal broached agreements concerning the refugees who arrive in the EU via Turkey, as well as discussions about EU membership.
If Erdogan and Turkey were to break the agreement, the EU could see a repeat of the 2015 refugee crisis, as the bloc has still not secured its borders.
Neither Jean-Claude Juncker, the president of the European Commission, nor Angela Merkel have fulfilled their promises for a “European solution”. As a result, President Erdogan has unprecedented power over the EU.
The final deal Bonse refers to in his e-book, covering the Juncker years, refers to the ongoing trade war with the USA.
In July 2018 Washington prevented punitive US tariffs from being imposed on EU cars, but Donald Trump has since threatened to break the deal.
The US President continues to increase pressure against the Europeans, something Bonse describes as negotiations @ gunpoint. If only one deal bursts, the EU will fall into a deep crisis again. And this time around it will be the end of the EU as we know it.
