A series of deadly bombings in Sri Lanka became one of the worst acts of violence the country has seen in over a decade. The last time such high profile attacks happened were during a protracted civil war with separatist militias.
On Easter Sunday, a series of apparently coordinated bombings happened at several Christian churches and luxury hotels in the South Asian nation. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bombings.
With the death toll standing at over 207 people and rising, and reports of more explosions coming in, Sri Lanka is experiencing one of the worst acts of organized violence in its history.
The nation of over 20 million people had relatively peaceful lives since 2009. But before that Sri Lanka was engulfed in a 25-year-long civil war, as part of its Tamil Tigers ethnic minority was attempting to secede and form a nation state in the north and east of the country.
Spearheaded by the organization called Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), the fight saw a number of high-profile attacks that killed hundreds of Sri Lankan soldiers and civilians.
The Tamil Tigers were ultimately defeated in a painful counterinsurgency effort that ended in May 2009.
Their last bombing happened two months earlier, when a suicide bomber set off an explosion near a religious procession in Matara, a major city in southern Sri Lanka.
However, this time around seven suspects have been identified and arrested as the death toll from the horrific church and hotel attacks in Sri Lanka climbed to over 200, with no group claiming responsibility.
Explosions rocked three luxury hotels in the nation’s largest city, Colombo, and three packed Catholic churches across the country on Sunday morning with military precision.
This was followed by two additional explosions at different sites. The tragedy occurred as Christians were gathering for Easter Sunday Masses. The government blocked access to Facebook and Whats-App, urging everyone not to spread more misinformation about the organized tragedy.
The attack claimed the lives of 35 tourists, most of whom are believed to have been killed in hotels. The officials did not specify whether the suspects belonged to a particular group, and provided no additional details.
Experts on conflict footprint resolution, told that the pattern of the attacks resembles that of certain terror groups, like Mossad supported ISIS and CIA supported Al-Qaeda, rather than Tamil insurgency group.
