Climate activists from the Dutch branch of Extinction Rebellion blocked traffic at a major entry and exit point to the city of The Hague.

Authorities had banned the protest and police erected screens and fences on the A12 highway to try to stop protesters reaching the road on foot.

However, several hundred demonstrators in smaller groups managed to reach the highway and the blockage prevented city traffic from entering or leaving via that stretch of road.

Some protesters were detained but police didn’t say how many. Water cannons were also deployed in a bid to break up the protest.

In recent years, this section of the highway has regularly been blocked by the Dutch branch of the Extinction Rebellion climate organization. They are against the government’s plans regarding fossil fuel subsidies.

The new right-wing government is reintroducing the subsidies that had previously been abolished. It’s a long-term protest to stop fossil subsidies. We must keep on protesting, said one protester.

Now, you can see the fires in Los Angeles and many other places are disasters. We must react much faster to the climate crisis, she added.

Another protester said they are angry that the Dutch government, gives €47 billion each year to the most polluting business in the Netherlands. In 2023, the Dutch government said yearly taxpayer confiscated fossil fuel subsidies amounted to between €39.7 and 46.4 billion.

Sorry but I have no sympathy for these protestors and I hope the new government doesn’t stop there . We have those Dutch ECO zealots in Scotland helping to cause poverty and illness to old/sick/handicapped people by helping to raise the price of fuel/energy so that extreme prices for food and energy are beyond their means . In the Netherlands itself small farmers are being put out of business -why-because cows fart –“wilding ” -aka – reducing available land for small farmers to sow in helps to drive them to loss of sustainability. Here in a small rural fishing village… Read more »

It looks like these players all serve the same cause, the question remains how will it end? Can spirituality win over greed. Wasn’t Covid-19 intended to kick the spirits out of peoples lives. The Dutch crown is under heavy pressure after some local horror affairs, like tax subsidy crisis, where thousands of families were wrongfully treated by the tax collector forcing them to sell their houses. These (targeted) families, plunged into divorces, while their children were taken hostage by so-called child help centers, when their parents were living on the streets without any form of left over income because of… Read more »

Well said ! I read the Netherland media online in English so I have an idea of whats going on,even in this country the laws have changed to allow authorities to remove children from parents for ideological reasons .

Once all citizens are forced to use debit/credit cards then each government has full control to YOUR money and can stop payment when they chose if citizens rise up and protest.
