The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory alert for citizens considering a trip to the Netherlands.
The department has raised the advisory to a Level II, urging citizens to “exercise increased caution.” The alert is due to terrorism concerns.
The bulletin states “Terrorists continue plotting possible attacks in the Netherlands, while Dutch newspapers are downplaying terror acts by covering the facts, saying that accidents happen or that lonely wolves were involved?
Terrorists may attack with little or no warning, targeting tourist locations, hotels, clubs, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, local government facilities.
But also restaurants, places of worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas.
The department says citizens traveling to the Netherlands should be aware of surroundings when in tourist locations and large public venues.
Travelers are also urged to keep an eye on local media and be ready to adjust plans based on any new information.
