The United States is deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to the Eastern Mediterranean to bolster US regional deterrence efforts in response to the Hamas attack on Israel, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Sunday.
I have directed the movement of the USS Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group to the Eastern Mediterranean. This includes the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78).
The USS Gerald Ford is backed up by the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60), as well as three Arleigh-Burke-class guided missile destroyers.
The USS Thomas Hudner (DDG 116), USS Ramage (DDG 61), USS Carney (DDG 64), and USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) form the backbone of the naval forces.
The USA maintains ready forces globally to further reinforce this deterrence posture if required. The US military will be rapidly providing the Israel Defense Forces with additional equipment and resources, including munitions, which will begin arriving in the coming days.
The USS Gerald R. Ford, the Navy’s newest and most advanced aircraft carrier, and its approximately 5,000 sailors and deck of warplanes will be accompanied by cruisers and destroyers in a show of force that is meant to be ready to respond to anything.
The large deployment, which includes a host of ships and warplanes, underscores the concern that the United States has in trying to deter the conflict from growing.
But the Israeli government formally declared war Sunday and gave the green light for significant military steps to retaliate against Hamas.
