The U.S. Army’s 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 11th Airborne Division, has demonstrated an effective transition from a cavalry reconnaissance formation to a parachute infantry battalion capable of conducting airborne assaults, forcible-entry operations, and rapid deployment missions across the Arctic and Pacific regions.
This was demonstrated at the Red Flag-Alaska 26-2 exercise.
The transformation is particularly significant due to strategic competition with Russia in the Arctic, and China and North Korea in the Pacific, with Alaska’s Arctic location and close proximity to the Pacific make it a critical location for force projection against all three potential adversaries.
The 11th Airborne Division will be relied on to deploy rapidly across vast distances and operate in austere environments with limited infrastructure, inserting directly into contested areas without relying on established infrastructure.
The U.S. Marine Corps has notably played a more prominent role in expanding assault capabilities in the Arctic and Pacific, and in early 2026 deployed 3,000 personnel for operations in the Norwegian Arctic to participate in Exercise Cold Response, which was intended to test NATO’s ability to operate and fight in extreme Arctic conditions alongside over 22,000 other NATO personnel.
Russia prepares to defend its Arctic Coastline & Economic Zone
The U.S. Armed Forces have placed a growing emphasis on Arctic warfare capabilities since the early 2020’s, with Norway having frequently hosted high value assets such as B-1B strategic bombers for exercises and shows of force in the region.
Alaska has itself been prioritized to permanently host the largest concentration of fifth generation fighter aircraft in the United States, including 54 F-35A fighters and two squadrons of F-22 fighters.
Rising temperatures and receding ice levels are expected to expose vast energy and mineral resources in the Arctic, which has been a leading factor stimulating both Russia and NATO member states to more rapidly expand their regional military presences.
The USA has clinched a $6.1 billion deal with Finland to build 11 new Icebreakers
Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Alexander Moiseyev in December provided new insight into recent developments in the region, warning: “I must say that the situation in the Arctic region remains difficult.
Instead of discussions of cooperation in the Arctic, we are increasingly hearing the opposite thing, including that the Arctic is the region of a potential future conflict.
He observed that NATO members bordering the Arctic had significantly accelerated the construction of icebreakers and ice-class ships, while developing a wide range of drone types intended specifically for combat in the region.
These actions prove that Russia is forming military instruments of deterrence in the Arctic.
However, I’d like to note that we are not moving closer to their borders; they are moving closer to ours, he noted. Russia has faced fast growing pressure on its defenses across multiple fronts, with the Arctic being among the most significant.

Running behind schedule 4 to 5 years.
Yes Donald knows he is way behind in Icebreaker building and is trying to catch up , I hope they are better than the “Liberty Boats” America sold to Britain in WW2 using “Lease/Lend ” the rivets came apart in rough seas in the Atlantic and no contrary to the comment “across the Pond ” its a 4000 mile journey – big pond –eh !
They got a bad reputation from war torn UK . If German U boats didn’t sink them then they sunk themselves.
NATO /USA cant complain Russia owns the North Sea route its theirs legally .
What NATO wants is Siberian resources which just happen to be full of rare minerals needed in smartphones /communications /satellites/military planes etc etc . Russia would be very foolish if it didn’t protect its own resources .
America is trying to control the Straights through Iran they cant complain if Russia does the same but to its own property not as the USA is trying to do to an area it does not own.
