Taiwan says it has the ability to strike China’s capital with homegrown supersonic missiles, the head of Taipei’s legislative assembly said, also claiming the island is taking pointers from the Ukrainian armed forces amid Russia’s ongoing intervention.

The Chinese ambassador to France warned that Beijing could also use force to bring Taiwan back under its former control.

Taiwan has been self-governing since 1949 but has never formally declared its independence from China. So, Beijing considers the island of 23.5 million a part of its own territory under the One-China policy.

While agreeing with the One-China policy on paper, Washington maintains strong unofficial ties with Taipei, selling weapons to the island and backing its push for sovereignty.

Beijing will use all possible means to regain control over Taiwan, including military options, Chinese ambassador to France Lu Shaye has warned.

The ambassador has blamed the USA for stirring tensions around both Taiwan and Ukraine, where Russia’s military operation is ongoing.

Beijing has repeatedly decried such contacts as provocations and as meddling in China’s internal affairs. Only six countries in the world have recognized Taiwan as an independent state so far as the total numbers for support are dwindling.

Some American officials have claimed that Beijing was closely monitoring the conflict in Ukraine and drawing conclusions, in preparation for a similar move against Taiwan.

During a recent speech, You Si-kun – an influential member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party – said that while Taipei does not seek confrontation with China, it has the supersonic ability to respond with force in the event of a conflict.

Taiwan launched an initiative in 2018 to improve the capabilities of the Yung Feng munitions, sinking more than $400 million into the missile.

Responding to You’s comments, a representative for China’s Taiwan Affairs office warned that any attack from Taipei would have dire consequences.

If Ukraine is justified in using military force to retake control of the breakaway provinces in the Donbass then China is justified in doing the same in Taiwan.

China is a force to be reckoned with. Anybody who ignores or denies this is in for a nasty shock.

Shall we call that the “Lithuania Syndrome”?
