Yerevan signed a Russian-brokered peace deal with Baku, after ethnic Armenian forces fighting in disputed Nagorno-Karabakh were exhausted, and on the brink of being crushed. So, by the time terms of a truce were agreed with Azerbaijan.

The troops have been sent to the area to keep apart the forces of ethnic Armenians and Azerbaijanis. The breakaway region’s top official, Arayik Harutyunyan addressed the development, acknowledging the military deal in a TV address.

After a six-week-long armed conflict, the Armenians have been forced to relinquish control over large swaths of Azerbaijani territory that they won three decades ago.

The defending forces were exhausted by more than 40 days of fighting and being outgunned by their opponents. Turkish drones, and mercenaries from the Middle East fighting for Azerbaijan, had turned the tide of the battle.

The armistice was praised by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev as “historic,” and as “painful” but necessary by Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan.

The truce, which was mediated by Russia, leaves a portion of Nagorno-Karabakh as well as a land corridor connecting it to Armenian territory under Stepanakert’s control. Russian peacekeepers have been deployed to the area to keep the warring parties apart.

Russia mediated the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which had supported Nagorno-Karabakh’s bid for independence.

A dozen Ilyushin Il-76 transport planes carried the peacekeeping troops, armored vehicles, and other equipment necessary for Russia’s mission.

The soldiers will separate the parties of the conflict and guard a land corridor connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia.

The news caused turmoil in Armenia, which supported Nagorno-Karabakh militarily. Overnight, angry crowds stormed the parliament building and the residence of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, whom they blame for the defeat.
