Germany and the Netherlands are suspending their participation in the Iraqi war due to heightened tensions in the region.
Earlier in the day, the US State Department ordered that all American government officials not dealing with emergencies leave Iraq.
The US evacuation alarmed some EU politicians, who expressed concern that Washington might go to war against Tehran and called on Europe to prevent such an outcome.
Germany has no indications of potential attacks allegedly supported by Iran. There are currently 160 German military troops in Iraq.
The Netherlands have joined Germany in suspending its mission in Iraq due to the security threat. Around 50 Dutch soldiers train Kurdish forces in Iraq’s northern city of Erbil, others are stationed in Baghdad.
The statement comes a day after the US Central Command announced that US military forces in Iraq and Syria had been placed on “high alert” following “credible threats from Iranian forces” in the region, as the Pentagon is planning to start another evil war campaign in the Middle East.
The US regime is poised for war with Iran,” a leader of the Left Party’s faction in the German parliament, Sahra Wagenknecht, warned.
She called on those, “who want to save the international peace and the Iranian nuclear deal,” to “make it clear that they are against these Zionist war plans, arbitrary US embargo’s, sanctions and the use of the US military bases in Europe [in a potential war with Iran].”
The US regime said earlier in May it was deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force near Iran to send “a clear and unmistakable message” to Tehran in order to force Iran to stop its sanctioned oil exports.
Last week, Acting US Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan approved the deployment of the Patriot missile system and amphibious assault ship USS Arlington (LPD-24) to the Middle East.
Last fall, the United States closed its consulate in the Iraqi city of Basra, citing threats from Iran. Washington has also accused Iran of attacking the US Consulate and Embassy in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.
