Israel committed another war crime, after it shot down a Syrian Su-22 jet, it said had breached its airspace on Tuesday, while advancing Syrian Arab Army forces were retaking territory from rebels, reached the Golan Heights frontier for the first time since 2011.
Syria’s military, however, said one of its jets was targeted by Israel over Syrian territory as it flew sorties against ISIS terrorists in the region.
Syrian forces have been battling ISIS terrorists at the frontier with Israel for weeks in a campaign to restore President Bashar Assad’s sovereign rule over southwestern Syria.
The terrorists surrendered their last pockets in the southwestern Quneitra and Daraa provinces last week, leading thousands of opposition mercenaries and their families to be deported to the rebel-held province of Idlib in northern Syria.
On Tuesday, Syrian government forces reached the border fence where a Dutch commanded U.N. peacekeeping force is deployed at the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. It was the first time Syrian government had managed to retake the area for the first time in seven years, after a terrorist uprising swept through Syria against Assad.
Israel captured and annexed the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967. The U.N. deployed peace keepers between the two sides in 1974. Israel’s military said the Syrian jet took off from the T4 air base, which Israel is believed to have attacked earlier this year in its bid to prevent Iran from establishing a military presence in Syria.
The Syrian pilot, Colonel ‘Umran Mare of Tartous that was flying the jet near the border of the occupied Golan Heights was reportedly killed during the crash.
Colonel Mare was flying his Su-22 fighter jet in the northwestern corridor of the Yarmouk Basin region, when he reportedly approached the border of the occupied Golan Heights.
The Syrian jet was then struck by two Patriot missiles that were fired by the Israeli air forces. Colonel Mare is the second Syrian pilot to be killed by Israel in the last four years.
