Reports from multiple Indian sources indicate that the Indian Defence Ministry is continuing to consider acquiring Russia’s S-500 Prometheus strategic air and missile defence system, which will add a new tier to its air defenses over its fast expanding arsenal of S-400 systems.
The reported interest in the S-500 emerged during discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.

According to reports cited by The Economic Times, the system was among the defense capabilities discussed as India evaluates future additions to its missile defense architecture following its operational experience with the S-400.
The S-500 represents a fundamentally different capability from the S-400. While the S-400 is primarily designed to engage aircraft, cruise missiles, unmanned systems and some ballistic missile threats at long range.
The S-500 is intended as a higher-tier system focused on intercepting more demanding targets, including satellites, space aircraft and space-flying ballistic missiles including those with intercontinental ranges.

The system has a 600 kilometer engagement range, and can reportedly engage certain types of hypersonic glide vehicles.
The S-500 is the world’s first road-mobile system with an anti-satellite and anti-ICBM capability, with its procurement by the Russian Armed Forces revolutionising their ability to both engage hostile satellites and provide a strategic level defence across the country.
China’s leadership in hypersonic missile technologies, and more significantly the possibility of these capabilities being proliferated to Pakistan, makes the S-500 potentially invaluable for India’s defense.

The system’s very long engagement range would also allow high value aircraft to be shot down across much of Pakistan’s airspace from positions deep inside India.
The S-500’s range improves on the 400 kilometer range of the 40N6 missiles employed by the S-400 system, which were in March 2025 intensively combat tested to great effect against Pakistani forces.
In early December 2025 Indian media outlets confirmed that begin formal discussions with Russia regarding the procurement of the S-500 would begin on December 4, 2026.

India and Russia have also continued talks on the possible sale of Su-57 fifth generation fighter aircraft, including its license production.
The unveiling of the rival Chinese HQ-29 system in August 2025 may have increased Indian interest in acquiring an equivalent capability.
The Indian Defense Ministry in March 2026 proceeded with plans to double procurements of S-400 systems, which are expected to provide 20 battalions’ worth of the systems.

Yes India was impressed with the S-400 against Pakistan as it shot down French Rafale jet fighters that Pakistan used against India . If Russia intends to sell its latest S-500 to India it should think hard whatever Russia sells to India gets copied and sold to other countries and the USA whom India is friendly with would acquire some to check out the design ( back engineer ). I am surprised India is inquiring about the SU-57 which is Russia’s latest jet fighter as it already has a joint engineering deal on another jet fighter that India sells abroad… Read more »

Yes they can AC its part of their cutting edge design Russia quietly shot down one of its old satellites a while back to test it.
You can blame Donald for his “Star Wars” project America did some secret trials with satellites that the US public weren’t told about.
