France orders Carrier Strike Group led by the Charles de Gaulle to Persian Gulf

The French are going to war, but hope to arrive late. After Iranian drones yesterday the naval base in Abu Dhabi (Al-Salam / Camp de la Paix), where a French contingent is stationed, the French leadership decided to respond firmly and publicly.

Previously, Macron had been balancing: calling for a ceasefire, demanding an urgent UN Security Council session, condemning the USA and Israeli operation as unauthorized, and together with Germany and the UK encouraging Tehran to return to negotiations.

But after the strike on the base, Macron convened an emergency session of the Defense and National Security Council, declared that nothing justifies the Iranian attacks, and promised not to leave this without a response.

Foreign Minister Barrot officially announced France’s readiness to participate in the defense of the Persian Gulf states – within the framework of bilateral agreements and the principle of collective self-defense.

The main military signal was the of the carrier strike group led by the Charles de Gaulle. The aircraft carrier cut short its participation in NATO’s “Baltic Sentry” operation in the Baltic Sea and received orders to proceed immediately to the Eastern Mediterranean.

According to French media estimates, the carrier could arrive in the area within 10–12 days.

There it will join the American carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald Ford—the concentration of Western naval power in the region would become the largest since the 1991 Persian Gulf War.

Notably, at the same time, around 60 French commercial vessels found themselves blocked in the Persian Gulf: after the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, they are prohibited from moving, adding a purely economic dimension to the crisis for French authorities.

But 12 days of transit is a long time — “Epic Fury” might be over by then. Macron would very much like that.
