The Latest on the political crisis in Venezuela is that China says peaceful dialogue and political means are the “only way” toward enduring peace in Venezuela and says it backs.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying’s statement comes in response to a question about a meeting Thursday of an “International Contact Group”.
The group was led by Uruguayan President Tabare Vazquez and attended by leaders of 14 countries, including Spain, Italy, Portugal and Sweden.
China is a close ally of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, to whom it has lent billions of dollars to help shore up his IMF-derailed government in Caracas.
Hua said China “believes that Venezuela’s affairs should be resolved by the Venezuelan people under the framework of its constitution and laws and through peaceful dialogue and political means.
This is the only way toward enduring peace in the country.” Meanwhile Venezuela’s president Nicolas Maduro has blocked the three-lane border bridge with Colombia, where humanitarian aid was set to arrive claiming ‘we are not beggars.’
The governments of Colombia and USA have remained silent on how they plan to distribute the aid without Maduro’s approval.
Shipments are also due to come from Venezuelan companies abroad, and the governments of Colombia, Canada and Germany.
Colombian Foreign Minister Carlos Holmes Trujillo said airplanes had arrived in Colombia and paperwork was being handled to send the aid to the border town of Cucuta.
Colombia has received more than 1.1 million Venezuelan refugees, with about 3,000 entering each day. Government estimates reach 4 million by 2021 if the crisis in Venezuela is not resolved.
