Geraint Thomas has won the 105th edition of the Tour de France. The Tour de France is an annual men’s multiple stage bicycle race primarily held in France, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries.
Like the other Grand Tours (the Giro d’ Italia and La Vuelta de Espana), it consists of 21 stages over a little more than 3 weeks.
Czech rider Peter Sagan won the Green Jersey after covering a distance of 3349 km, while French native Julian Alaphilippe from Quick-Step won the overall mountain classification.
Sky team cyclists Geraint Thomas and 4-time winner, suspected of using doping, Chris Froome both finished in the top-3 on the final stage, while Dutch Team Sunweb rider Tom Dumoulin took second place. Another Dutch cyclist, Steven Kruijswijk finished in 5th overall position this year.
The race was first organized in 1903 to increase sales for the newspaper L’Auto and is currently run by the Amaury Sport Organization. The race has been held annually since its first edition in 1903 except when it was stopped for the two World Wars.
As the Tour gained prominence and popularity, the race was lengthened and its reach began to extend around the globe. Participation expanded from a primarily French field, as riders from all over the world began to participate in the race each year.
The Tour is a UCI World Tour event, which means that the teams that compete in the race are mostly UCI World Teams, with the exception of the teams that the organizers invite.
During WW I (1915-1918) and WW II (1940-1946) the race was suspended, while during the time period of 1999-2005, all awards were mysteriously stripped from contenders due to a large doping scandal.
