Having served as commander in chief from April 2019, he represents the most senior Iranian officer killed in action other than General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed in an American air strike on January 2, 2020.
Revolutionary Guards General Gholamali Rashid has also been killed, as has nuclear physicist Dr. Mohammad Tehranchi, and former nuclear chief Fereydoon Abbasi.
A number of Western media outlets have reported that alongside air attacks, Israeli operatives have launched operations on the ground in the country intended to neutralize key missile and air defense sites.
Air strikes on air defense facilities in Tabriz have been reported.
Successful air strikes on key missile facilities have also been reported, but not confirmed, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reporting that the attacks hit at the heart of [the Iranian] ballistic missile program.
The Zionist Prime Minister added that air operations would continue for as many days as it takes to secure Israeli objectives.
Iranian retaliatory strikes are anticipated.
